Directions For Those Who Suspect They Might Have Encountered Bed Bugs Or Who Visited Places Where Bed Bugs Are Frequently Present.

These instructions apply to the employees of the offices, travelers, frequent public transportation users, hotel staff, and in general to all concerned about bringing bed bugs home with us.  Bed bugs can be found practically everywhere. The more transient the environment the more likelihood for concern.

The best defense against bed bugs is knowledge of facts, not popular beliefs. These instructions are the result of 15 years of exclusive dedication to bed bug prevention, detection, and non-toxic extermination.

The process described here considers steps you can take even before you leave your home as prevention is the first step.

  1. Before You Leave Home: Use any over-the-counter spray containing DEET. A few of them are OFF, Repel, and MAxi DEET to lightly spray your shoes and other surfaces of your clothing/body which will most likely make contact with possibly bed bug-infested surfaces or items. Don’t forget your luggage. Spray it on the outside only. DEET contains a strong repellent which will make you less attractive to bed bugs.
  2. Upon Your Return Home: Strip your clothes and place them right away in a washer if they need to be washed or in the dryer, if they don’t need to be washed. If you don’t plan on following this step right away, please place all of the clothes you were wearing in a plastic bag and seal the bag. This is a more practical approach for those who are frequently exposed to bed bugs. You will simply collect clothes in a plastic bag and process it when you normally do your laundry. The laundering process for bed bugs is the same as any other laundry. The laundering no matter how long or intricate will not eliminate eggs, which is why we recommend drying as far more effective for bed bug eggs or hatched bed bugs. Remember, it is far more effective to bake them rather than to drown bed bugs.

WasherDryer Settings: Wash the items the way you would normally wash them depending on what is recommended for the type of fabric or a garment.

Drying should be performed on the highest setting above 104 degrees F, for about 30 minutes. Make sure the fill the dryer to a maximum of 50% of the dryer’s capacity. This will ensure proper temperature distribution and eliminate any difficulty for heat to penetrate pockets.

If you are dealing with items that can’t be washed, dry cleaning or steaming is another option. Steaming can be performed with a regular clothes streamer as long as you take your time and move the steamer head slowly. For most clothes steamers we recommend moving at 12-15 seconds per foot.

Home/Apartment Environment Set Up: The 2 steps outlined above are the front line in prevention. For those in the high-risk group due to their exposure, we strongly recommend additional steps that will ensure early detection and monitoring.

Bed Bug Climbup Monitors: This device is by far the most effective in detecting, monitoring, and controlling bed bug infestation assuming the right type is used. It must installed and maintained properly. This process can be quite complicated and must be done 100% right or you will be giving yourself a false sense of security and throwing your money away. 1. Mattress/ Box Spring Encasements: Highest Quality, designed foremost for bed bugs encasements are a must. Mattresses and especially box springs provide an infinite number of places for bed bugs to hide. Since there ARE NO PESTICIDES that are effective and safe for bed bugs, mechanical measures mentioned in this document are by far more effective and safe for you and your family. The use of DEET-based products can be effective ONLY in scenarios described earlier and has a limited use.
